Unlocking the Mio C230 – Version 3.5 with Route, Theme, Screen, Settings & Skins Management

main_3_5.jpg

The long-awaited Version 3.5 update to my Mio C230 Unlock includes many refinements since Version 3.4 was released.   Thanks go out to all who’ve contributed to this release, even if I unintentionally forgot to give credit to you.

  1. An variety of additional Games screens to accommodate 5 additional games included in this release (thanks to Mike and the individual that put the download packages together!), as well as more of your own.   So as to not bloat the Flash Disk with the additional games, install them in the Games folder in the root of your Storage Card.

    capscr0106.jpg

    green_games.jpg
  2. A Screen Choices” menu that has been further refined to allow you to select a theme that will be applied to the main desktop screen, the Extra Tools screen and the Games screen in unison.
    capscr0100.jpg
  3. A Skins Choices” menu (thanx Mike FFI) to manage your favorite skins saved on your SD card and be able to choose them on the fly to further personalize your C230!
    capscr0093.jpg

    capscr0094.jpg
  4. A Settings Choices” menu that now allows you to choose the menu text font size and suppress upcoming cities and communities in the navigation bar in addition to the flyover options previously offered, again, on the fly as the needs change.
    capscr0089.jpg
  5. The latest version of Ameridan’s (me) skin (an enhanced Mio skin) and CD’s (C. Dean) Quicksilver ’66 skin, both adapted exclusively for the Mio C230.   These will be installed in the Skins folder of your SD card.    You can add your own additional favorites to this folder as well.
  6. A set of document viewers so that you’ll be able to peruse just about any common document type out there.   The set includes:  a PDF document viewer , another Image viewer, a Powerpoint presentation viewer, an Excel document viewer and a Word document viewer.

Please note that this release does not apply to those using my Version 3.3 LITE.  That release will be published seperately.

From either desktop screen, you’ll be able to access the ”Extra Tools” screen, the new “Games” screen  or your chosen clock screen. You might also choose a clock or desktop default screen and never access the others.    All served the way you like it!

The largest advantage is the ability to pre-plan upcoming vacation trips, business trips, delivery routes, etc., save those routes, and activate them at your convenience.

Many blog readers are stating that this is their main reason for unlocking, not for the desktop access of other programs.

New Skins

CD’s Quicksilver ’66 for C230 Skin is included in this package.   It includes my fix resolving the proper announcements at roundabout intersections.   You’ll also find details on his nice personal refinements to his Unlock screens, as shown in photo above, here.

Check out the GTO car icon that he designed himself!

New Games  Wink [;)]

Aquelaball is a JezzBall-like game for PocketPC.Mini View

Just draw a line with the stylus to have a vertical or horizontal line spread across the whole screen. If a ball touches the line while it is being drawn, it will be cancelled and you&ecute;ll loose alife.

Cover over 75% of the screen and make it to the next level, with 1 more ball.

 Mini ViewTest out your reflexes and Stylus control with BallBreaker !All the balls are shooting strait at you, and you just can’t touch them…   The only solution is to explode them against the grey squares…The more balls you break, the more you’ll have coming at you.

 Mini ViewCaisses is a Sokoban clone that includes 500 levels and 14 different backgrounds and themes.   The original version of Caisses is Caisses DS, a Nintendo DS homebrew coded by Kukulcan.In this game, you are a warehouse keeper, and your mission consists in arranging boxes by pushing them onto their designated locations…Boxes can be pushed, but not pulled, and the controls are simple : either point to the spot to move to with the stylus, or use the directional pad !

 Mini ViewPipes is a classic in the puzzle world.Select one of the 6 difficulty levels (actually 12 as for each you can activate wrap mode, making it MUCH harder…) and try to light up all the flowers…Turn the pipes by clicking on them, and try to bring water throughout the whole board in as little time as possible.

 Mini ViewSkinz Sudoku is a Sudoku game which combines good looks and ease of use…It offers beautiful graphs by Daydream, with 4 different skins depending on the difficulty level.
The game’s particularity is that it offers 4 different input methods for you to select from, to fit everyone’s needs…
– Wheel : Select a number from the number wheel around the tile you touched. You can also set a hint by touching one of the corners…
– Square : Same thing, but in a simplier/more compact layout…
– Bar : Select first which number to plot, and then touch the grid to put it anywhere…
– Writing : In this mode, touch a tile to have it zoom, and just write down the number you want !   You can also add small number hints at anytime, with every input method, using the top right button, or undo if you make an error…All the levels are randomly generated, so don’t expect to finish the game soon

Additional Games are available here.

Route Management

Someday, there could well be built-in MioMap screens for Route Management (I’m available, Mio) either in alternative skins or adopted by iGo or Mio in an update, to do these same functions using the logic strategy contained in my menus (with thanks to Xania for the initial work), but for now the menus seem like an excellent alternative, especially now that the Exit button functions so nicely.

capscr0092.jpg

capscr0110.jpg

With the Route Management menu, you can not only preplan your routes, but by

  • Exiting
  • Saving your route with a descriptive name
  • Restarting MioMap back up again with that route still in memory or loading that route into memory at a later time
  • Using the Edit Route screen and reversing the order of your waypoints
  • Exiting and Saving once again with a different name representing the return trip
  • – Voila – you’ve got your return trip available in the menu without inputing all of your way-points once again.

Use the GPS power button now available in the enhanced skins to temporarily turn off the GPS chip, so that when pre-planning routes not having anything to do with your present location, the Route recalculation will not mess you up your itinerary.

The Ameridan skin (included) for the C230 includes all of the tweaks mentioned in this blog including:

  • Exit Door button needed if you are unlocking your C230.
  • Revised start screen identifying the source of the modified file.
  • Export Track button allowing you to export the track log into a gpx file directly.
  • Easy Route option described here.
  • GPS Screen with the globe rotated such that North America is proudly shownand the GPS Power button needed for uninterrupted general map viewing and Route preplanning without Auto Route Recalculation kicking in.

Starting with Version 3.3, the menu script creates automatic  entries to the SYS.TXT file needed for this menu to function. You no longer need to run through the setup process prior to using the menu.

I’ve gone through a lot of coffee again on this release ( the best one yet! ) and if you are pleased with the results and haven’t already done so, kindly consider a small donation to my coffee fund.

Unlock Version NXT-R3.5

[BEFORE YOU FOLLOW THE PROCEDURES TO MODIFY YOUR MIO C230, KNOW THAT YOU MIGHT RENDER YOUR C230 UNUSABLE AND YOU MIGHT VOID YOUR WARRANTY. YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.]

Installation procedure

  1. Turn on C230 and connect it to the computer using a 5-pin Mini-B USB 2.0 cable (not included in the package).
  2. C230 will show up as a flash drive in My Computer as Mio Device. Mine is assigned as F drive. I’ll use F drive in the following steps. Substitute it with the actual drive letter of your system. If you have a SD card in the slot, it shows up as well – in my case as G drive.
  3. Rename the folder F:\MioMap\MioMap to F:\MioMap\MioMap2.
  4. In order not to get the message ”destination full”, you may need to free up some space on your flash disk. See Note3.
  5. Download MioC230_NXT_R3_5.zip
  6. USA MioC230 users – The enhanced C230 skin is included in the download.   Owners of the European C230, please review this page and Note 4, before Unlocking for information on using this Unlock on your units. You can modify the file yourself – See Note 4.
  7. Extract the files from your Unlock download and find the four folders MioMap,  Script, Skins and Games.
  8. Copy MioMap to F:\MioMap\ and copy Script to F:\ as in the screenshot. Don’t speed through this step – it’s got to be done as described!
     miodevice.jpg
  9. Copy the Skins and Games folders to the root of your SD card and make a backup copy of the original data.zip file to your PC or Storage Card.
  10. If you would rather use the “iPhone-look” icons without the English sub-text, then replace the icons in  \My Flash Disk\Script\Icons  with the alternate icons available here and in the comments for the Version 3.4 Blog.
  11. Disconnect Mio C230 and do a hard reset by sliding the switch on the rear of your C230 to OFF and back to ON again.
  12. After calibrating the touch screen, the initial Unlock script will automatically run AUTOPATCHER (no menu selection necessary), soft reset and present you with a desktop screen.   It is important that you select a skin that has an Exit button before launching MioMap, so go into the MioMap Management Menu (first large icon in top left corner) and choose an enhanced MioMap skin (Ameridan C230 is suggested initially), unless you are manually modifying DATA.ZIP per Note4 below because you are unlocking a MioC230 that isn’t the USA or Canada version.

Note 1: If you wish to undo the enhancements and return the Mio C230 back to factory condition:

  1. Turn on C230 and connect it to the computer using a USB cable.
  2. Rename the folder F:\MioMap\MioMap to F:\MioMap\MioMap3 (or delete) and rename the folder F:\MioMap\MioMap2 to F:\MioMap\MioMap
  3. Copy back any map files you may have deleted or moved to your SD card and restore your DATA.ZIP file.   The SYS.TXT file shouldn’t need to be restored.
  4. Disconnect the cable and hard reset C230 using the switch on the back of the unit.

Note 2: Remember, every time you disconnect the USB cable linked to your PC, you will need to do atleast a soft reset, although in some cases you really should do a hard reset. The time and date will need to be reset after a hard reset, unless you are going right into MioMap with Time Autosync enabled. This is why you might consider using a SD card in conjunction with a USB card reader for adding programs and storing media files once you’re happy with your unlocked Mio setup.

Note 3: In order not to get the message “destination full”, you’ll need to free up some space on your flash disk by moving at-least 12MB of map files to your SD card by creating a MioMap folder and within that folder a maps folder so that the path appears as G:\MioMap\maps. Choose a combination of map file(s) you’re not accessing every day (in case your SD card isn’t always inserted) from F:\MioMap\MioMap2\maps and move them to the maps folder on your SD card. MioMap will see them after a hard reset as if nothing happened. Or you could delete them (or copy to your PC) if you choose not to use a SD card at this time, since it’s easy to explore your MioMap DVD and copy them back to the original folder or a SD card later, if needed.

Note 4: Instructions to modify your DATA.ZIP file yourself (from Amida’s Hack #2).
[Not normally applicable for US and Canada units any longer, because Skins Management will allow you to choose Skins that already incorporate the needed revisions]

  1. Make a backup of your original DATA.ZIP file. The file is F:\MioMap\MioMap2\DATA.ZIP .
  2. Unzip the original DATA.ZIP to your local hard drive.
  3. Edit the file mio\common\ui\default_setup.ui in the uncompressed files.
  4. Find the following line and delete it. Note that this is for C230 only. You might need to edit/delete other line for other models.
    runif vDeviceType “MIOC230″ ‘btn_exit_app.hide’
  5. Compress the files back into DATA.ZIP again.
  6. Copy the DATA.ZIP from step 6 to the F:\MioMap\MioMap2\ directory.
  7. If you get a ctype.dat error as has happened with some users, either try again or download the file instead. When it comes to zipping the file back up, it has been learned that WinZip version 11 (10 is OK though) is not compatible with MioMap. I use WinRAR and I choose “best” compression but I’m not sure if that really matters.

Version 3.5 User’s Manual: Using your unlocked C230

Default Screens

Any one of these can become your default screen simply by making your choice in the Screen Choice Menu.

capscr0012a.jpg

Screen Choices Menu

If you scroll down in the Route Management menu selections, you’ll see the option for Screen Choices that is brand new in Version 3.4

capscr0100.jpg
  • Would you like to make any changes to the desktop or clock Screens? This gives you a chance to get out without going through the other questions.
  • Would you like a desktop screen to be the default screen? No makes a clock screen the primary screen after a reset instead.
  • Would you like to swap clock screens? Your preference – the green one or the orange one.
  • Would you like to swap desktop screen themes? Your preference – the green theme or the “iPhone-look” theme are applied to the primary desktop screen, the Games screen and the Extra Tools screen simultaneously.

Clock Screens

You’ll note that the MioMap icon and the Next Screen icons are dimmed in the Clock screens, so that the initial screen might serve as a simple, unclutterd clock screen in your RV or automobile.

clock3.jpg

  • The MioMap icon will take you directly to my new menu with options to either proceed into the MioMap program, Save / Delete / Rename / Load routes, View / Update MioMap settings in SYS.TXT, view a brief Help screen on Exiting MioMap, quickly be able to turn off the taskbar before running MioMap and of course make your screen choices.
  • The Next Screen arrow icon will take you to your chosen desktop screen.
  • You can return to the Clock screens by clicking on the Clock icon.
  • From the desktop screens, you can proceed to other screens you may have designed, or to the Games or Extra Tools screens, which are included only in this unlock package.

Games

capscr0106.jpg

Eight (8) games are included in this package.   I’ve written MortScript scripts for each of the games that run in portrait mode that will do so automatically and will return your unit to landscape mode when exiting the game.   If you want to downsize the package or if you know you won’t want any or all of the games, simply skip copying the Games folder to the root of your SD card. and you will be left with only Solitaire and LitesOn.

Route Management

main_3_5.jpg

^ From either the clock screen or the desktop screen, click on the MioMap icon (the GPS icon in the upper left)

capscr0092.jpg

Prior to unlocking your Mio GPS, you would be unable to save multiple routes and the default route.dat file normally saved in \My Documents\MioMap folder would be erased during a hard reset, making the Route Management menu feature a substantial add-on to your Mio C230!

Normally you don’t need to save a route on your Mio, since you can just create a POI for the destination and regenerate the route dynamically when you want to go there. If you want to see where you actually drove along the way, you can record a track log. However, there could be times when you have created a more complex route with multiple waypoints, and you want to save it. This could be because:

  • you’ve imported the route as a set of waypoints from an online route planning site, and you don’t want to lose the effort of setting it up on the Mio
  • vacation pre-planning – you’ve set up a complex route for a vacation trip that doesn’t start from “home” and you want to load it into memory once you’ve arrived at the start point
  • you want to share your route with another Mio user.

NOTE: When planning routes that start from a location different from your present location (Vacation pre-planning), the Off-Route Recalculation option has a habit of interfering. You have a few options here:

  • The first leg of your trip can be from your present location to the intended starting point. Just keep setting your route up and when you’re finished, remove the first Waypoint (using the second button on the bottom of the Edit Route screen) which deletes that first segment of the Route. It seems that once you’re in the Edit Route screens /Fit to screen/ etc., that the GPS doesn’t recalculate from your present position. It’s when you are in Map or Cockpit where that happens. With the Route Management Menu, you just exit and Save your Route for future viewing or navigating.
  • The bottom selection on the General Settings page is Off-Route Recalculation. Switch this from Automatic to Disabled. This doesn’t actually turn off the GPS receiver, but it keeps the C230 from messing up your Route planning. Just don’t forget to switch it back to Automatic when your done with your Route planning.
  • If using an enhanced skin offering the GPS power button, turn the GPS chip off with this button and you will not experience any off-route calculation interference.

Sample pre-loaded route to view

capscr0033.jpg

^ click on “Load a Saved Route…” and select this sample file and it should copy itself as route.dat and open up in MioMap.    To visualize this Route, select Cockpit > Menu > Routes icon (third in bottom row) > Info > Fit to screen.     When you edit or delete route from within MioMap, you are impacting route.dat file, not the saved file you selected from the menu, so if you want to save changes you’ve made, you’ll have to do so after you exit MioMap and return to the Route Management menu.

capscr0110.jpg

Creating Routes

  • We’ll make an example up > Go to History or Address and select a destination, Mio will create a route, click in the area of the 3 green rectangles, Select Fit to Screen to see route. Your route has already been autosaved as route.dat.
  • Now we’re going to save it with another name so it doesn’t get erased > Menu, Home, Exit, go to Route Management Menu, select Save, select a Name and you’re done.
  • If we go back into MioMap, it always resumes with the route.dat file (if it exists) so if you wan’t to work on a different saved route, you need to load it into memory using that option in the Route Management menu.
  • If you create a new route in MioMap now, that route replaces route.dat with this new information, but since you’ve saved the former route with another name, you can just load that saved route in to replace route.dat again.

Settings Management

Map Font Size

The first option involves the font size of the map text (street and city names) that by default is 100; I believe this means 100%, rather than actual font size, since the text size varies with the zoom level.     I’ve come up with two larger sizes to help the visually challenged (either because of eyesight or non-ideal conditions in the placement of your GPS unit – like on a motorcycle).  LARGE which is 130 (30% larger) and XLARGE which is 150 (50% larger).   Realize that the there is a downside to the large fonts.   If the road is short or the name is real long,  the name may not fit and may not show until you zoom in further.   Also, the map may take on a cluttered look in a city where the streets are in close proximity to each other.   That is where the menu option to change the font size on the fly comes in real handy.

If you find that you would like LARGE and XLARGE values to differ from what I have chosen, adjust the numbers in the script to suit your needs.

City Names in the Navigation bar

By default, if your route goes through several settlements, MioMap displays the next city name instead of the name on the top of the cockpit screen until you get closer to the next maneuver. I usually do not care about the next city name – what I would like to see is the upcoming street name whenever I look at it. Especially since on US maps there are so many little “settlements” nobody even knows that they exist…

The second option addresses the complaint quoted above by giving you the option of suppressing the Cockpit display of upcoming city and community names in the Navigation bar.   The factory setting is annoying to may users in that they don’t want to see the names of the upcoming cities in the Navigation bar; they can see those on the map itself.   They simply want the next street name requiring their attention to appear in the Navigation bar, even if it is many miles away.

This setting can be changed on the fly as well, but I find myself keeping the setting set to Suppress all of the time.

capscr0089.jpg

Flyover settings

iGo calls the two flyover modes: Lifelike simulation mode which runs real-time (at speed-limit rate) and includes voice instructions – mainly used by retail stores with looping turned ON as DEMO mode, and for the user to become familiar with it’s routing functioning. Fast-flyover mode runs 10 times faster (10X the speed-limit rate) and voice instructions are not played in this mode, but I find that it is much more useful for reviewing a planned route.

capscr0028.jpg

^ your choice. Mio’s default is YES (demo mode), but I prefer NO.

capscr0091.jpg

^ the script reads your current SLOWSIM value (slow simulation – which is the inverse of fast flyover) entry in the file and allows you to keep the value (YES) or change it (NO). For fast flyover, slowsim=1 is changed to slowsim=0.

NOTE:  Accelerated Flyover should be set to OFF, if you are using enhanced skins that also give you Flyover options while in the Route screens, so as to not reverse the expected behavior when chosing your options from within MioMap.

One-Way streets

capscr0030.jpg

^ the script reads your current entry in the file and allows you to keep the value (YES) or change it (NO).

This is another option that is nice to be able to change on the fly.   When turned ON, you will see pale blue arrows indicating the flow of traffic on One-Way streets.   You will also see red icons indicating roads that you are not allowed to drive on, such as golf cart only and private roads.

Desktop Theme Management

When selecting themes now, you set the background and icon selections for not only the main desktop screen, but the Extra Tools and Games screens as well.   The choices currently offered are the Green Theme and the iPhone-look theme.    You can change the whole look by simply chosing your own background image and substituting it in place of the back.bmp or back_black.bmp files in the Script folder.

Skins Management

You can add as many additional skins as you want by creating folders within the Skins folder that’s on your SD card.   As an example, if you want to add Riks skin, create a folder ‘Riks for C230’,  and then copy the respective DATA.ZIP as-is into that folder – not into the MioMap2 folder as you do for singular skin changes.

Green Theme

capscr0095.jpg

You’ll note that the MioMap icon and the Media Player are larger than the rest. My reasoning for this is that they will probably be your favorites and you are likely to access these without a stylus. The other icons…

  • MioTool– hitting the small “ab” box in the top left corner with your stylus will reveal a virtual keyboard for entering data. To turn the keyboard off again, just hit the icon again. Another method of engaging the keyboard is hitting the keyboard icon on the taskbar (2nd from the right).
  • MioMap– Starts my new menu with options to either proceed into the MioMap program, Save / Delete / Rename / Load routes, View / Update MioMap settings in SYS.TXT, view a brief Help screen on Exiting MioMap, and quickly be able to turn off the taskbar before running MioMap. Exitand Cancel both take you back to the desktop screen. You can either select your option and hit OK, or simply double-click your option.
  • TCPMP Media PlayerCore Pocket Media Playeris loaded with features and options that aren’t realized until you click Options\Settings\Select Page and explore around. The current version in this build is TCPMP version 0.72RC1 with all of the available extra drivers and it will play manyaudio and video formats, as well as photo files and flash videos. By running the program once, you will associate all of the supported file types, so that you will then be able to click on a .wav file, as an example, in File Manager and play the file.

capscr0014.jpg

Shortcuts 2nd row-from-bottom across:

  • Clock – proceeds to your chosen Clock screen for that uncluttered look.
  • Windows Explorer – my primary reason for using this shortcut is to fix file icon associations in File Manager and to resolve the Show Toolbar performance.It should be noted that the first time you select Windows Explorer, you are likely to get the Mio orange screen with a minimized taskbar at the bottom. You just need to use your stylus in the right corner of the hidden taskbar (the narrow gray stripe at the bottom edge – this is why it is important to carefully calibrate your screen with a stylus!) and choose Desktop (don’t click on MainShell). At this point, the taskbar and Windows Explorer will behave better, and the icon associations in File Explorer will work, and other programs that seem to be missing menus, like exit, folder selection, etc. will display their own taskbar (see the Freecell screenshot).
  • Pocket Notepad– viewing txt files and for creating quick txt files with the virtual keyboard. Comes in handy for quick editing ini, mscr and other text files.
  • Volume Control – graphic volume control display
  • Games screen  – <described above> proceeds to the Games screen, dedicated to the included Game programs (some of them provided by Blog readers) so that you can have some fun too.   A stylus is recommended for most of them though (not a pen).

    green_games.jpg

  • An empty spot for a shortcut of your own (plus room for another 8 shortcuts above this row and as many more pages full of icons as you wish) *
  • GQ Photo Viewer– GQ is easier to use for viewing multiple photos than media player, and it has a zoom function
  • Restart – soft reset button

Shortcuts 1st row-from-bottom across:

  • MioUtility– quick access to adjust Backlight, Volume, Screen calibrate, Power, Date/Time and Language. This is the program that older units like the Mio C220 used to exit from MioMap into, but MioMap 3.3 has been written such that these choices are all available from within the program now and in fact the Volume Control appears to be non-functional. You’ll find that setting the date and time is much easier by clicking on the clock on the toolbar, unless you like the 24-hour format.

capscr0021.jpg

  • Taskbar toggle –toggles the taskbar on and off in whatever state it is in (hidden or revealed) The taskbar area of the green desktop screen is also programmed to trigger this function.
  • FileManCE2 – Two-pane File Manager application alternative to Windows Explorer.
  • Extra Tools Screen –<described below> an animated slide to another Desktop screen with additional tool programs that may not be used as frequently. This will serve as an example for you to come up with alternative screens if you install many other programs onto your Mio C230 and wish to group them onto their own screens.
  • WR-Tooks ResInfo –Quick access to status info on battery, program memory, storage memory, Flash Disk useage, Storage Card useage, tasks and processes currently running, system information and settings. Most of this information is also available from Control Panel as well.
  • capscr0019.jpg

  • My Calculator – a scientific calculator that is large enough to use without a stylus. To exit, click on the About tab, then on the X on the right side
  • CapScrUtil– a screen capture utility. Remember to store the .bmp images to either Storage Card or My Flash Disk for easy access to the screenshots. (This utility was used to create all of the images in this blog page)

“iPhone-look” Theme

Program icons starting with the top row (small icons):

  • MioTool– hitting the small “ab” box in the top left corner with your stylus will reveal a virtual keyboard for entering data. To turn the keyboard off again, just hit the icon again. Another method of engaging the keyboard is hitting the keyboard icon on the taskbar (2nd from the right).
  • Move Any Window– the mouse icon, is used when you anticipate needing to move windows around (those that drag properly can just be slid over with your finger) or gaining access to the right mouse function by opening this program window beforehand.
  • More Tools Screen –<described below> an animated slide to another Desktop screen with additional tool programs that may not be used as frequently. This will serve as an example for you to come up with alternative screens if you install many other programs onto your Mio C230 and wish to group them onto their own screens.
  • Volume Control – graphic volume control display
  • Taskbar toggle –toggles the taskbar on and off in whatever state it is in (hidden or revealed).

Program icons starting with the top row of large icons:

capscr0014.jpg

  • GQ Photo Viewer– GQ is easier to use for viewing multiple photos than media player, and it has a zoom function
  • FileManCE2 – Two-pane File Manager application alternative to Windows Explorer.
  • DPMS– puts your screen to sleep while everything else continues to run. This could save battery consumption while recording GPS track logs or playing an audio book, etc. Apparently, if you leave the icon in it’s present location, it also seems to toggle the screen back on when you tap it with the screen dark. This is a quirky program / icon sometimes, so if relocate it and it behaves badly, you’ve been forewarned.

Program icons starting with the 2nd row of large icons:

  • Clock – proceeds to your chosen Clock screen for that uncluttered look.
  • My Calculator – a scientific calculator that is large enough to use without a stylus. To exit, click on the About tab, then on the X on the right side.

    capscr0106.jpg

  • Pocket Notepad– viewing txt files and for creating quick txt files with the virtual keyboard. Comes in handy for quick editing ini, mscr and other text files.
  • Pocket Paint
    ppaint.jpg
  • Program icons starting with the 3rd row of large icons:

    • Restart – soft reset button
    • MioUtility– quick access to adjust Backlight, Volume, Screen calibrate, Power, Date/Time and Language. This is the program that older units like the Mio C220 used to exit from MioMap into, but MioMap 3.3 has been written such that these choices are all available from within the program now and in fact the Volume Control appears to be non-functional. You’ll find that setting the date and time is much easier by clicking on the clock on the toolbar, unless you like the 24-hour format.
    • WR-Tooks ResInfo –Quick access to status info on battery, program memory, storage memory, Flash Disk useage, Storage Card useage, tasks and processes currently running, system information and settings. Most of this information is also available from Control Panel as well.
    • CapScrUtil– a screen capture utility. Remember to store the .bmp images to either Storage Card or My Flash Disk for easy access to the screenshots. (This utility was used to create all of the images in this blog page)

    Extra Tools

    capscr0107.jpg

    • ScreenRotate – gives you the ability to rotate the screen counterclockwise 90° with each tap
    • DPMS– puts your screen to sleep while everything else continues to run. This could save battery consumption while recording GPS track logs or playing an audio book, etc.
    • Volume Control – graphic volume control display
    • Taskbar toggle – toggles the taskbar on and off in whatever state it is in (hidden or revealed)
    • Move Any Window– the mouse icon, is used when you anticipate needing to move windows around (those that drag properly can just be slid over with your finger) or gaining access to the right mouse function by opening this program window beforehand
    • RegEditor – TRE Registry Editor ver 0.82 Only use this to view entries though until you are confident that you are not going to end up with a C230 “brick” (Not really since a hard reset wipes out all of your changes)
    • ITaskMgr – Another tool to allow you to view CPU usage, as well as view and manage processes and tasks that are currently running
    • Restart – soft reset button
    • Microsoft® PDF document viewer
    • Microsoft® Image viewer
    • Microsoft® Powerpoint presentation viewer
    • Microsoft® Excel document viewer
    • Microsoft® Word document viewer

    Taskbar

    The registry tweaks introduced with version 3.1 should help tame the taskbar performance. The default setting for “Always on Top” has been deactivated. Try to remember to toggle the taskbar OFF prior to using MioMap though. Want the day and date? Press and hold the clock on the screen. Want to minimize the taskbar? Start/Settings/Taskbar Properties/OK.

    Adding your own programs and icons

    Add any additional programs (.exe files, not .cab files) you’re interested in to the script folder, try them (try them means not only do they seem to work, but that they don’t cause any issues with the other programs, especially after a hard reset), and if you decide to keep them and want a desktop shortcut to them, add your own icon (.ico file) to the script folder and add the data to main.ini, also in the script folder.

    * Any “empty” icon(s) on the desktop screen are in fact not empty, but the icons are “dimmed” to zero (actually 1). Otherwise the go.ico would show with no program associated with it and people would complain about the error message and ask why the icon doesn’t work. I doubt that you’ll find this documented anywhere else on the web – but just change the ScaleAlpha parameter to 100, and wala, the icon will shine thru at full “brightness”. That is how I “dimmed” the two icons on the default clock desktop screen – I set the ScaleAlpha to 25. You could dim those icons to 1 if you wanted to hide them completely, but they would still function.

    ICONXPBUTTON
    X = 121
    Y = 175
    Command = \My Flash Disk\Script\(your program.exe)
    SizeNormal = 32
    SizePushed = 32
    ScaleAlpha = 1 (change to 100)
    IconNormal = \My Flash Disk\Script\(your icon file name).ico
    ScaleAlpha = 100
    IconPushed = \My Flash Disk\Script\go.ico

    For an english translation of the online manual to learn more about SystemInformation that controls all of the desktop screens.

    Registry tweaks that are included

    • The 2007 changes for DST work correctly now for the EST time zone*
    • The default time zone is GMT-5 (EST)*
    • Key clicks and screen tap sounds are enabled
    • Volume level in Windows CE, which is independent of the volume settings within MioMap, is cranked up
    • File Manager font is Tahoma 7, which works much better on the 3.5″ screen
    • The default folder for GQ Viewer media is \Storage Card
    • The default ALWAYS ON TOP behavior for the taskbar is disabled, although the setting seems to sneak back in once in awhile
    • The automatic tutorial during startup of the Calculator is disabled

    * Added instructions in the script file so that using my code as an example, you can adapt the script to a time zone other than EST.

    To return to the desktop screens or the Route Management Menu from within MioMap, simply click on the Exit Door.

      Thanks so much CD!

      Especially for all of the icons you’ve modified over the last few weeks, the great Quicksilver 66 skin and the Game Room background you sent me yesterday. As you can see I’ve incorporated it into the build.

      I’ll take this opportunity to explain how to switch the brushed metal Games screen for the Game Room screen in case that is your preference:

      Rename Games.ini to Games_1.ini
      then rename Games_2.ini to Games.ini

      It is important not to mess up the names of the ini files in the SysInfo folder, because Screen Management will not function properly otherwise.

      C230,
      Nice job! One question. I have the office documents viewers for quite some time. However, I don’t know if they are freeware or not. The company that made them still sells those software.

    5. c230 said

      Amida,

      It is my understanding that Microsoft file viewers are freeware, and that fees are involved to upgrade to have file editing capabilities. I’ll remove the viewers though if this isn’t in fact the case.

      I haven’t been visiting in a while but I think I found a bug in the factory software. (Maybe the hack route management solves the problem) Take two points of interest not near your current GPS location. It doesn’t matter if it is your own, ones added with the POI importer or the factory POI. Click on the first one and then select “start” from the bottom of the screen, this should make that PoI your starting point. The little blue flag pops up. Then search and select your second PoI and it will pop up, select route to and it will route from the first PoI to the second, when that is done it will immediately route from your current location to the second PoI.
      I tried this several times, when I was trying to get directions for someone from one location to another and not anywhere near where I was. The only way I was able to get it to work was to route from my current location, to the first PoI, to the second location and then to edit and delete my current location from the itinerary.

      The latest hack looks interesting and I might give it a try.

    7. c230 said

      Mike,

      I think what you are describing is not a bug, but off-route recalculation kicking in. For the task you are describing, either turn the GPS chip power off, or turn off the recalculation function prior to picking your start point.

    8. Mike said

      Thanks, that worked, I turned off automatic recalculation, tried it again and it didn’t try and recalculate from my current point.
      and as I wrote this I think my GPS said, “off route!”

    9. Mike said

      I like the 3.5 hack, I am very impressed. I could use the PDF view and MS office apps for work related stuff and the games were great for weekend.

    10. c230 said

      Thank you for the feedback Mike. Because of the additional games, skins and document viewers, the package is a little 🙂 larger. Although most of it installs onto the SD card rather than the Flash Disk, I’m glad not to hear complaints about the download size. I too agree that the end result leaves us with a very versatile little handheld computer that also serves as a great GPS unit.

    11. Mike said

      You can’t use password protected files for the PDFs or the excel viewers, but still cool. I didn’t try password protection for the other viewers.

      Hi,
      This looks awesome, although I won’t install it because I’m making my own desktops with own shortcuts.

      I have 3 questions:
      – Is there a quik way to edit the icon text?
      – Now you’re talking about Microsoft reading tools. Is there soft that runs on the c230 to synch with my outlook calendar?
      – How to setup the audio volume when it does a soft restart?

      You haven’t included the Gapi tool, IMO very interesting software… 🙂

      Keep up the suberp work, I think I do the mini-audio-jack mod today, have all the components now!

      Greetz,
      HaCo.

    14. c230 said

      Thanks HaCo!

      1) No, unless CD knows of an easy quik way.
      2) No, I don’t think any Calendar software will run that depends on the OS task scheduler being present.
      3) Set volume in autopatcher so that you don’t have to readjust.

    16. strider_mt2k said

      I’m undoubtedly in the minority here, but after spending some time with 3.5 I’ve reverted back to 3.4.

      It’s not for any functional reasons. It all seems to work extremely well.
      In fact it’s been remarkable all down the line how well executed these hacks have been and all the work that’s been done here is absolutely fantastic and wonderful.
      Seriously for like the 80th time THANK YOU you mad developing folks, and don’t stop whatever you do! 😀

      However, for me it boils down to these things.
      1) I don’t use my C230 on a daily basis as a GPS, so the additional route stuff doesn’t really do anything for me in a literal sense. See also reason 4.

      2) I’m not into any of the new games other than Patience for the Solitaire, and I’ve already gotten help with installing it and performing a work-around for replacing Free Cell app and icon icon in 3.4.
      Nothing against the games here, they just aren’t ones that I’m into.

      3) While the addition of the paint app, the office apps and PDF viewer are indeed awesome for those that will use them, I don’t see me realistically utilizing my C230 for that purpose.
      What I DO see me using it for is a very killer little personal multimedia player, thus my recent purchase of an 8GB memory card and the completion of the headphone jack modification.
      I’ve also started looking into getting a C220 battery for mine to increase it’s running time.

      4) Overall look and feel.
      This is a purely subjective thing, but to me the styling of the 3.4 setup with the iPhone-ish icons, black background and the more “minimalist” alternate screens is about as close to perfection as I can imagine this device being for me.
      Keep in mind that I’m older at age 41, and my tastes are probably swinging into the more conservative, but from a styling standpoint the new icons and screens not only seem “cartoony” to me in comparison to the other icons but they also seem mismatched; some having frames around them and some floating on the backgrounds.
      For me the overall look seems slightly less polished, though I have to keep repeating that it all functions wonderfully.

      That being said I think it’s perfectly cool for everyone to pick and choose what they like to make their C230 the best device it can be for their needs.
      At least for now I think I’m going to stay here at 3.4.

      I am no less a fan and an admirer.
      I raise a fresh cup of coffee to you in salute!

      SAAAAL-UTE!

    17. strider_mt2k said

      Well now that’s one on me.
      I didn’t know they were direct copies of the iPhone icons.
      I was just clued in by someone less clueless than me. 😮

      I can certainly understand you wanting a less derivative scheme for the icons, not to mention avoiding “Imperial” entanglements and making your creation more your own.

      Anyway, I also stuck with the 3.4 version cause I’ve made to many changes that I don’t want to remake. For those interested I am in the process of creating a setr of icons with the border around them like my chess icon. I will post it in the icon area when I’m ready.

    19. robb1 said

      Nice work C230! As someone else mentioned, I don’t play games or need many of the other apps so I am sticking with v3.4, actually a hybrid version with some things I’ve changed and/or removed. I will incorporate a few of the new features into it though. Thanks!

    20. c230 said

      Thanks all!

      OK, for those wishing to manually upgrade their Version 3.4, I’ll try to cover here, and then I can insert it into the 3.5 Blog once we’ve got it confirmed.

      The essense of the upgrade will be accomplished by replacing or manually updating these Version 3.4 files:
      Script\Routes.mscr
      Script\SysInfo folder
      Script\Icons folder
      Script\main.ini
      Script\main_alt.ini

      and…
      Adding Skins folder to the SD card if that hasn’t already been done
      Adding Games folder to the SD card if you want the additional games
      Adding Script\Viewers folder if you want the Viewers

      The text is part of the icon, itself. So you would have to go into it, delete the text, make sure the background is transparent, and add the text of yor choice.

    22. CD said

      Also, the desktop icons in the QS ’66 screen shots are mine, alone. They can be downloaded by going to the link, but going to the 3.5 build will not add them to what you have. Instead, you will have the look that is shown in the first screenshot above; the iphone-ish look.

      PocketXpdf.exe
      I have my entirre price list for my job in pdf on my mio and this veiwer is much better at viewing pdfs. It renders the pdf at the zoom level you choose rather than squish it from a larger view, in other words, it is MUCH easier to read.
      It’s also freeware. http://pocketxpdf.sourceforge.net/

    25. c230 said

      Not having used any of the viewers, I appreciate the feedback, as I’m sure others do.

      Actually, other than than the updated management menu, there was a lot of thought as whether I should bloat the package with games and viewers or not. I decided that the unwanted stuff can always be pitched, but there are many who would have a difficult time finding some of these programs and then getting the programs to run, so I opted to include them.

      Of course we can only take this so far, and future releases may not include some of the programs, instead instructing users to pull files from older versions if they still want them. Feedback pretty much guides these decisions. A long winded way of saying “keep the feedback and ideas flowing”

      How many like the Game Room screen? I’m actually getting a little tired of it already, opting for the simpler brushed metal Games screen.

    26. strider_mt2k said

      I like that brushed metal background and eventually will get around to dropping it into my setup.
      Probably in a minute or two now that I’m mentioning it.

      Would it be forward of me to request a Backgammon and/or “Yahtzee” ?
      I found a freeware “Yahtzee” clone called “tripYzee”

      but I wasn’t sure how to test it out as it appears to have data files and I didn’t know what to do with ’em.

      striker,

      If you’re lucky, just drop the dat files in the Games folder along with the program and try-r-out.

      everybody,

      I’ve been wondering what the Route Method slider in the Quicksilver skin (and probably other skins too) Route Parameter screen with Fast on the left and Optimal on the right does, since right underneath it is the Route parameter where you select Fast, Econonmical, Easy, etc.

      Well, I found the answer in the iGo manual and it hit me that it should have been obvious, but wasn’t. Here is the description:

      “Use this handle to set the speed of the route calculation. In the leftmost position, the route may not be optimal, but the calculation will be very fast. Sliding it to the right will result in more accurate routing in an increased amount of time. NOTE: Since iGo calculates routes very quickly, the slider only comes into play for long routes, as short routes are always calculated to give you the optimal result.”

      This just may be the answer some of you have been looking for regarding “wierd” or unexpected routing. Try using the full optimal setting.

      No luck with the Backgammons.

      I like the game room background in-and-of-itself. But it limits the number of games you can put on that screen. I switched to the brushed steel and then to one of my choice. I currently have 14 games on my game screen (space 15 is for the ‘back’ button.) I set it up like a checkerboard… alternating between black and white buttons.

      I too do not really like the busy looking screens and I too use the unit primarily for the same reasons as yourself. I made a new clock screen which has become my primary screen with some minimilist icons and launch to a cleaned up games screen and a cleaned up tools screen. I got rid of the second tools screen and all of the tools that I don’t use on a regular basis.
      These mods are very easy to do and the files can be modified on your PC with a text editior. If you are interested in using my set-up as is or modifying it to suite your “younger” tastes ley me know and I will place the files somewhere for you to download them.

      I’ve included instructions to get around not using a SD card, but if you’re a newbie, I’d advise against it or Unlocking with the LITE version instead.

      Thank you very much for providing an easy way to unlock Mio C230.

      I have one problem. My input key pad desnt seem to work. When I try to save a route, an input key pad autocatically appears but when I pick letters from it nothing happens. Is there anyway to fix it?

      Hi,
      Thanks for the 3.5 package, I just got my GPS and tried to upgrade with this, everything seems to be working fine except:
      1) I do not see Games and Paint icon, do not know why?
      2) How do I create a new icon ?
      3) How do I run another executable like scummvm ?
      4) How do I get Extra Tools screen ?

      Can you please help me in resolving those issues ?

      Thanks much,
      Nirapada

      Srikanth,

      After the virtual keyboard comes up, click on the input field and then use your keyboard.

      Nirapada,

      The Blog Manual that follows the installation instructions covers every one of your questions.

    55. Nirapada said

      Thanks C230 for your prompt response, I verified it again. Here is what I have got in Main.INI for those two:
      ICONXPBUTTON
      x = 128
      y = 95
      NewIni = \My Flash Disk\Script\SysInfo\Games.INI
      SizeNormal = 64
      SizePushed = 64
      ScaleAlpha = 100
      IconNormal = \My Flash Disk\Script\icons\games64.ico
      ScaleAlpha = 100
      IconPushed = \My Flash Disk\Script\icons\games64.ico
      ShutDownAnimation = FlyRight

      ICONXPBUTTON
      x = 256
      y = 95
      Command = \My Flash Disk\Script\ppaint.exe
      SizeNormal = 64
      SizePushed = 64
      ScaleAlpha = 100
      IconNormal = \My Flash Disk\Script\icons\paint64.ico
      ScaleAlpha = 100
      IconPushed = \My Flash Disk\Script\icons\paint64.ico

      But still, I am getting those two “empty icon” and dimmed.
      Also, I forgot to mention:
      1) Sometimes, after I do a hard reset, it is displaying the message which says the device will be unlocked now …and going for another soft restart. I thought I should see that only for the first time.
      2) I did use iPhone-look icons [ step 10] — in case that has any significance
      3) I couldn’t choose “Ameridan C230” [ step 12] because it was showing me “no skins found” message when I tried to do that.

      Thank you very much,
      Nirapada

    56. Nirapada said

      BTW, those two spots are showing “no icon” in dimmed condition.

    57. c230 said

      Nirapada,

      1) After every hard reset you will see that message.
      2) Step 10 states “If you would rather use the “iPhone-look” icons without the English sub-text, then replace the icons in \My Flash Disk\Script\Icons with the alternate icons available here and in the comments for the Version 3.4 Blog.” because the Games icon and the Paint icon weren’t part of the Icons folder at the time that download package was created. I’m pretty sure they’re available, but if not, we”ll update that download to include those icons.
      3) Skins folder needs to be at the root of your SD card, as stated in Step 9.
      4) The black text on the brushed charcoal metal background is why No Icon is hard to read.

    58. Nirapada said

      I think I figured out why those icons were not being shown. I have copied everything to primary media [ internal] and GAMES.INI had them in Storage Card. I fixed it — the icons are seen now. But whenever I select any one of those [ including chess ], it is displaying some screen and before I can read anything, it is coming back to the original game selection screen again.
      Please help.
      Thanks.

      Nirapada,

      I’ve deleted many of your comments, as I feel that they all boil down to your not following the instructions and not willing to read through prior blogs and comments / tips from other users. I just bought another 2GB Kingston SD card today for $12.88 at InkStop, so they are not expensive. I would recommend following the instructions and then gradually changing things as you figure out how it all works, if you still desire.

      My (comforting) message during a hard reset (the key portion of the Unlock) is there because many readers were alarmed (especially during the first occurence), not knowing whether the Mio was behaving properly prior to the desktop screen appearing, and only occupies an additional 5 seconds.

    60. Nirapada said

      You are right, I didn’t pay enough attention to all details and took it for granted that things will be OK. I was too excited to go to a store to buy an SD card or wait for it. As because I thought, my flash drive has enough storage for it, it would be OK. And yes, I didn’t read through all other blogs.

      Please be assured, I will do the needful before I come back asking you tons of questions. Sorry again.

      Please feel free to delete all my comments including this.
      Thanks.

      Since someone figured out a way to make the “Easy” route with the fewest turns, I am wondering if a “Straight” route can also be devised. I have only owned the C230 for a few days and already I can see that the route it usually gives me for things I am familiar with, always differs from what Mapquest would recommend or what I feel is the best way. An example is this mall that is a half hour away from me, that the Mio feels I should take the highways with the faster speed limit but require me to drive half way around the perimeter of a circle, while Mapquest has me drive straight across the diameter of that circle. Maybe they get you there in about the same amount of time due to speed limits, but the quickest distance between 2 points is a straight line, so it’d be nice if there was a way to try to stick to that theory for route planning. I did try “Fast”, “Easy”, “Short”, and “Economical”, and only “Economical” had me go on some of the roads I would normally take, which is probably due to the reduced speed limits on them.

      Maybe what I am asking is something only the Mio people can devise, but I figured I would ask the experts on this forum if there was some script change that could make this possible! I am starting to question my purchase of the Mio as opposed to the upper-tiered products out there with possibly better routing functions. I guess they all get you there, but some get you there better than others!

      Thanks and keep up the excellent work!

      Those options are all that iGo have written for this version of MioMap. However. in your example, changing to Pedestrian mode just might help. Try it.

      I tested scummvm from file Manager, it works for Amazon Queen game, now I wanted to install a game icon [ icon file is provided with download]. I did add the icon correctly along with correct path. But I am unable to run it, it says unable to find PocketSCUMM [ or its components ] ….

      It seems I have to create another executable to be able to run it from icon, is there a way I can create that myself or any other tricks ?
      I have posted a message in that game’s weblog, but still no reply.

      If you have paint or photoshop you can select part of an image, cut it, paste it into a new smaller image (max 256×256) save it as a bitmap and then use iconfx to play with it.
      I almost have icons for all the games ready, I didn’t include scumm but I will now that you mention it. I also figured out how to arrange the game screen how I wanted I’ll put the whole thing in a package for download in a little bit.

      VirusChaser, XmasXed, Xump, Zi, Znax which do not run in C230, right ?

      All of the games I have icons for worked on my C230. In total including a few that are included in the 3.5 mio upgrade package I have 26 games and scummvm. The only one game I have an issue with is reversi/cez which doesn’t have an exit button. I kept it anyway cause I like that game and don’t mind turning off the mio to get out of it if I can play it. I also have about 15 games for scummvm but they take up alot of space and I didn’t need to create icons. The idea behind the turned games ini was that since most of the games I have run in verticle orientation I wanted to have the screen oriented vertically, the screen turning script should still be used, but if you are switching between games you don’t have to rotate the mio to read the icons. (the ini parameters have the icons set pretty small though.)
      you’ll also note that I included the settings icon cause it’s useful to have at the game screen for volume and such. most of the games are available at http://www.xflib.net/index.php?action=games,

    76. Nirapada said

      Thanks Mike,
      By any chance, do you happen to have a package I can download which has all these games ? That will save me some time to figure out individual games and download them one by one .

      Nirapada

    77. Nirapada said

      BTW, I have 2GB SD card, I hope that is enough for all these ?

    78. Davvinchi said

      the scummvm games you must own, but there might be a file available as a torrent. I think it was about 5GB. Other than that the amazon queen is the only free one I could get to work. The other stand alone games are available at the website. I’ll see if I can help with Pacman, tetris, and reversi(use at your own risk), or you could substitute sudoku, chess, etc into those slots as I didn’t put every game on the screen. I left my 3 fav games on the desktop screen.
      Aside from the scummvm games most of the games take just a few MB so you won’t have any problem with space. My whole package on my sd card is about 500MB including scummvm, goblins(a scumm game), and amazon queen(a scumm game), and a few other misc programs.

    79. Nirapada said

      I downloaded whatever I could find from the website you provided. For scummvm, I have amazon queen running but nothing more. I thought the ones you had were free. I have to do little research on other scummvm games to find out their prices and kinds.

      For others [pacman, tetris etc], where did you find them ?

      Thanks,

      blandwh,

      I state very clearly that my Unlock package is for the C230 only!

      If you wish to adapt it to other models at your own risk, then you can modify \My Flash Disk\MioMap\MioMap\miomap.mscr yourself to

      Run (“\My Flash Disk\MioMap\Script\FileManCE.exe”)

      instead of

      Run (“\My Flash Disk\MioMap\MioMap\autopatcher.exe”)

      Once in FileManager, you will have to select the desired autopatcher manually to proceed into unlocked mode. You could also point to your own autopatcher on the Storage Card instead. You have many options. You will find details by going back to Blogs for the initial releases of both Amida’s and my Unlock packages.

      Amida’s Unlock does give you the option you speak of.

      Good luck, and by the way, your English isn’t bad – but it took me awhile to figure out what you meant by FLESH (it’s FLASH 🙂 )

      C230 – awesome job on the unlock and skin!! I am “trying” a 230 right now to see if I like it better than the c320/520 – so far it suits my needs – I thought that the widscreen / splitscreen on the 320 was perfect, but your skin and Quicksilvers work just as well. The route management is especially cool.. one question to see if this is even possible (in the future) – can a route be created on say google maps or other mapping program and then transferred in? I know I saw a site somewhere that allowed you to create the route in google maps and then upload it to in this case a tom tom (http://www.elsewhere.org/journal/gmaptogpx/) – any thoughts as to if that is even possible? That is worth many cups of coffee 🙂 Keep up the good work!

    96. c230 said

      Jim,

      What some call routes are called tracks in MioLand. Yes, you can import tracks into the C230, but not routes (unless they are routes created in MioMap)

      ginobe,

      I notice no unusual delays in GPS signal acquisitions that can be attributed to my build or skins, but depending on how long it’s been since you last locked onto some satellites, how many are available in the current sky through the current window opening, and how long the GPS was on last, the times can vary quite a bit.

    97. ginobe said

    98. Jim said

      Thanks for the heads up c230 – so is it possible then to create tracks in some external program, up it to the c230 and then use that as a route?

      Also – one more question – I noticed that when you record a route and have create nmea/sirf log checked it outputs it to the gpslog folder on the sd card as a bin file. What programs will read that? Google earth cant pick it up.

      Has anyone actually gotten the AC3 plugin to work with TCPMP? I downloaded the zip file from http://picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/test/ac3.plugin.0.72RC1.zip and extracted the PLG file. I then copied that to the Script directory and get an error about versions not being compatible or something like that. If there is another AC3 PLG file out there that someone has gotten to work, I would love to hear about it since most of my video files use that codec. By the way, it’s only the audio that is the problem; the video plays fine (Xvid).

      Thanks in advance!

      Jim, i haven’t taken on tracks in-depth yet, but my StickiNote https://c230.wordpress.com/track-logs/ might help. That would be the best Blog for questions / comments / answers on track logs too, for others to be able to find later.

    101. c230 said

      Andrew,

      I extrapolated the ac3.plg from the ARM720.CAB folder and it worked fine. You probably did the one in the Windows Media folder that was easier to find, which would be the wrong version. As soon as MediaFire is running again, I’ll upload for you.

    102. Andrew said

      Oh sweet, that’d be great! Yeah I got the one from the Windows Desktop folder because that didn’t require any further extracting. But now I realize that they mean it is for the Windows XP version of their software, duh! And with PowerArchiver, if I go to try to extract the ARM720.CAB’s contents, nothing comes out which is somewhat unusual for PowerArchiver. Either PA finally met its match, or there is something corrupted in my downloaded package.

      Thanks so much for all your work – you have to be the best moderator on the whole WWW – at least in responding speed and helpfulness!

    103. c230 said

      Thanks andrew! Hey, because of my Blog readers, our TCPMP player keeps gettin’ better too. Ari supplied WMV/ASF files (encoded with WMV codec 9) drivers this week, and now the AC3 plugin – do you know how hard it is to find this stuff? 🙂

      OK, here’s the link: http://www.mediafire.com/?tcq92cj0m39 It will be included in my next release once confirmed that it works.

      How about posting a link to a sample AC3 video file if the plugin works?

    104. Andrew said

      Your welcome! The plugin works – thank you! I don’t have any samples that are small enough to share, but I found a site with a 10mb AC3 rock song – http://www.kellyindustries.com/downloads/ac3_hard_rock_48khz.zip

      But really, you must tell me your CAB extracting secret – what program you used to extract the PLG file! Maybe it is time to use whatever you use instead of PowerArchiver!

      Thanks again!

      If so, I am not sure if you saw my question regarding reducing the number of Auditory Alerts before making a maneuver on the road. When I asked the question the first time, I was told that Dominique was the person to ask, but I have yet to see you on these forums. So while I have you here, let me ask for a third time and last time (sorry if you saw this before and I am bothering you!).

      I am wondering if there is a simple operation to REDUCE the number of times Samantha or whoever reminds you that a turn/maneuver is forthcoming. Basically I’d rather not be reminded that I need to turn onto X Street when there are 800 yards left, 500 yards left, 300 yards left, etc – but instead be able to adjust the number of reminders. It’s not the end of the world if one can’t change this, but it seems like a good idea if one can manipulate these settings. Thanks!

      i was first trying to do some activesync stuff (because i think that it is very complementary with cab management) but i’ve just been able to recognize my mioc230 on my desktop with activesync and then nothing… I think wininet.dll is missing but i’m unable to copy it in the /windows folder…

      Andrew,

      The only thing I’ve found thus far involves manually changing the commands.csv file, which I would hope we not resort to. However, for your consideration and experimention endeavors…

      [note by Ameridan – this may apply to ver 3.2, rather than 3.3; for example purposes only]

      Modifying voice instructions

      When you approach a roundabout (rotary/traffic circle) then voice instructions are given 800, 300 and 100 metres prior, but only the very last one tells you which exit to take. It would be much better if the 300 meter announcement would contain the complete instructions, including the number of the exit to take.

      So now we are going to change the voice instructions. The voice file is stored in the map voice, every zip file is a voice you can select in I-go or Miomap. In the zip file you find an file called commands.csv. We have to modify this file, extract this file to your pc with full file path. after the modifications we have to add this file to the zip file also with full file path.

      Look for following line in the file:
      ,”300[equal,minsilence=10,if_not_2]”,”*prepare_to_enter_roundabout”,
      “prepare_to enter roundabout in %dist”

      Replace this line with following:
      ,”300[equal,minsilence=10,if_not_2,exit]”,”*enter_roundabout_exit”,
      “in %dist enter roundabout take %exit exit”

      Now we have a voice command in 300 meters prior to the roundabout telling which exit we have to take.

      Essentially, you might dictate the 300 meter text be “” instead, as an example.

      yes you are missing wininet.dll, metro needs it. And yes it is very difficult to get this file. I think it is not possible to redistribute it. I’ve build it on my own with the microsoft wince kit (free to download from microsoft)… And put it with metro and metro work fine with it! I use it (metro) very often when i go to Paris …

    114. c230 said

      Forgive me for asking Dominique, but how can an unlicensed driver file not be distributable? I’m thinking you mean that it might be hardware-dependent and therefore might not be compatible(?).

      Anyways, wininet.dll is available at http://www.mediafire.com/?iwl25krtvc9 – let me know how it goes.

      By the way, I’ve added a StickiNote for adding on Metro to the C230 here

    115. dominique said

      In fact i didn’t know why wininet.dll was so hard to find for me … Maybe because it was included in the other mio GPS?

      But now it is easy available for the c230 community ;.)

      So to make work metro you only needs in a folder :
      – MetroARMWCE.exe
      – WININET.DLL
      – And some .pdb files

      @c230 have you ever tryed/succeded to copy wininet.dll in the /windows folder ?

      The Mio C510 don’t need the wininet.dll … 😉

      Any clue if it’s possible to make it so the GPS permanently avoids a certain street? I live behind a school with a road that is chained off. The Mio seems to like to send me on that “Unnamed road” for Economical type routes and I have to manually avoid it each time. Is this something only a skin creator can make or can it be an added feature in the GPS menu or is it impossible altogether (needs Mio programmers)?

      Thanks so much for all your help!

    118. c230 said

      Andrew,

      I think this might be possible, based on xmasboy’s work on his SmartBlue skin. Read more at http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=70131&whichpage=84

      where he states:

      A header with “back” button is shown on the map when you click “Show” on Itinerary List. This function allows you switching between the map and Itinerary List easily. It gives you a visual clues while editing itinerary.

      The motive behind this function comes from other wish list – to avoid street selected on map. However, avoiding street selected on the map can not be done with my current knowledge on Mio script. I though this is a good alternative way to edit itinerary visually.

      Note: If you are really interested in completing this function: avoiding street selected on the map”, the codes are in this release but commented out. This is because it works only if your route is short.

      If you want to try it out or work on it, please search string “Avoid..” in the file “mapnavigate_320_240.ui”, uncomment that line and put the file back to the zip file. Once you done this, a new button “Avoid…” will be shown on the popup menu on navigation mode. If you click the buttun “Avoid…”, the street that you selected will be avoid if your route can be recalculated within 10 seconds. This means, this function sometimes does not work. I had tried many ways but I could not find a solution that works without problem or limitation. If you are interested in this function, work on it and post your solution.

      My thinking is that an AVOID command with the roadID# could be hardcoded in the Route Calculation script (vAvoidMenu.set), but although I think that may exceed my capabilities, I’ll look into it.

    119. Andrew said

      The skin I use – Olivercp – lets you tap on the top street name (the one you are about to use) and a menu pops up that lets you avoid it. This is good for occasional use, but ideally there would be a way to hardcode it as you say and never use that road or any Unnamed road for that matter! Some Unnamed roads may take you through business or schools, etc, so they really should all be avoided unless you are trying to shave off maybe 3 seconds from your trip’s time!

    120. Davvinchi said

      I have the same problem, isn’t there a way we could just delete the road, part of it, or make a road non-connecting? I live between two main roads on a small non-through road and it keeps telling me to go through, and then recalculates me making u-turns etc.on no-outlet rds (that used to go through 10yrs ago), until I’m about a mile from my house unless I manually avoid the street.

    121. Davvinchi said

      the other thing is to be able to rename unnamed rds and misnamed rds. I know the “local I-270 lanes” are called “unnamed rd” by the c230, it also calls “i-270″ :”Washington national pike south” and I’d love to shorten it to just “i-270”.

    122. c230 said

      Well, I’ve tried setting vSelectedUID to the roadID# in SYS.TXT, which would have been a neat trick as a semi-permanent AVOID (until you set another street to AVOID anyways), but that didn’t work. My assumption is that you wouldn’t use the actual street name, but the prefix ID # that is probably the main database identifier.

      In map_common.ui – I’ve found the scripts that set the street to be avoided and tried outputting a message box to help lead me to how to proceed, but no message; anyone got a clue? If we can get this working for one AVOID location, maybe we can work on an array of say 4 to 9 next, in addition to the temporary one that you set in MioMap.

      <script sc_avoidmenu_selected>
      lb_navitiner.getuid “vSelectedUID”
      INITMESSAGEBOX “RoadID to avoid.” vSelectedUID
      ITINER_AVOID vSelectedUID vAvoidMenu
      PREVSTATE
      </script>

      Davvinchi (Mike)

      We can’t change anything in the map file, but I’d like to think we can interfere with the processing of the data in the MioMap scripts.

      C230, I loaded your initial unlock [ 3.5 ] which comes with two skin selection choices, I wanted riks and oliverCP as options as well. I donwloaded both of them, one by one and copied the DATA.zip and ttf files over to Miomap2 directory, then hard rebooted my mio. But not getting these skin choices. Is there anything I am missing here ?

      Your help will be much appreciated.

      Thanks,

    124. c230 said

      Nirapada,
      Step 9 reads:

      Copy the Skins and Games folders to the root of your SD card and make a backup copy of the original data.zip file to your PC and/or to a Factory Skin folder within \Storage Card\Skins

      Nowhere in this paragraph do I see anything mentioned about Miomap2 folder???

      If you want to add Riks skin, it should be obvious you create a folder ‘Riks for C230’ in the Skins folder that’s on your SD card, and then copy the data.zip into that folder.

      I’m sorry, but where is the confusion coming from? There are 2 skins as examples already.

    125. Andrew said

      Whoa, I have never seen you get this frustrated before! A whole different side to you! LOL! I am sure it gets tiring dealing with the same questions all the time (and the lack of reading directions!). I guess there are just some people who cannot follow a simple set of directions, and those are the people who maybe should think about leaving their Mio’s in the “full upright and locked positions”!

    126. c230 said

      Did a little frustration come thru? Sorry about that, Nirapada.

      The SKIN folder in MioMap2 (for dominique’s skin trick) is not the same thing as the SKINS folder on the SD card. They serve 2 completely different purposes as I hope I’ve explained well in the Blogs.

    127. c230 said

      By the way, that brings to mind the factory skin backup statement I made in Step 9. I’ve revised it to read:

      Copy the Skins and Games folders to the root of your SD card and make a backup copy of the original data.zip file to your PC or Storage Card.

      to avoid having it show up on the Skins Management Menu as a selection, since it shouldn’t be used with an Unlocked unit.

    128. Nirapada said

      C230,
      I am sorry that my question did stir-up a little frustration in you mind. But just for the sake of myself, let me explain why I asked the question:

      1) I was already thru. for unlocking the device, So, I did not assume the steps for initial unlocking would be same as adding new skins later.
      2) I went to those “skins” blogs :
      http://computerbits.wordpress.com/2008/01/09/miomap-33-skins-for-mio-c230/
      And there I found out about what to do to add those new skins. And it said I have to add those two files in mizMap2 directory. That is why I added them there. It was not due to my negligence.

      I understand your frustration but hope you understand where I am coming from. Its something when you try to follow some direction without proper understanding of what you are doing [ for me ] and something else when you know what you are doing and someone else doesn’t know that. May be, you can point me to a place where I can read and understand [ rather than follow direction ] what you are doing, so that next time I won’t come back with those silly/stupid/funny/ignorant questions.

      I am grateful for your help anyways,

      Nirapada

    129. c230 said

      Thank you for the feedback. I understand now. Amida’s Unlock does not include Skins Management, so his instructions are for trying one skin at a time. Skins Management does this for you, if you add the skins to the Skins folder, as was stated in Refinement #5 all along:

      5. The latest version of Ameridan’s (me) skin (an enhanced Mio skin) and CD’s (C. Dean) Quicksilver ‘66 skin, both adapted exclusively for the Mio C230. These will be installed in the Skins folder of your SD card. You can add your own additional favorites to this folder as well

      I’ve added a clarification statement to the instructions that will hopefully help clear-up any confusion for others as well.

      OK, I’m getting anxious to get my hands on opop’s skin changes and try them out!

    130. Nirapada said

      Thanks C230, it works now.
      But I am still wondering why sometime when I come back from GPS to the main menu — I loose the keyclick sound. If I restart it the problem is gone. Is it a known issue ?

      Thanks,
      Nirapada

    131. c230 said

      Not for my skins, that I’m aware of. Which skin are you using? If it is Riks, perhaps that skin is manipulating the volume during the Exit process. Other than the enhanced factory skins, they all seem to have their little quirks – consider them Beta skins 🙂

    132. Nirapada said

      Yes, it is Riks.

      BTW, how do you figure out the latest versions of all these skins ? By going through each and every blog text ?

      First, I have to say that these hacks are the entire reason I went out and bought a C230. Mio really owes you something for all this work. Thank you thank you thank you.

      I am new to WIN CE

      I was interested in testing out Winpoker demo

      http://www.zamzone.com/PPC/index.asp

      but it expects activesync, which I don’t have and it appears it does not want to install on my PC.

      Also, I can’t find and EXE file to test it with

      Any chance you could suggest how to install and delete elements into the deskop/game room. If you can provide the basics, I will write it up in a more detailed note so maybe you won’t get pestered by these stupid questions. (OK, that probably wouldn’t help…anything new always increases the number of pestering, but it might be worth a shot).

      Thanks so much for all of your work.

      older so I am not sure what I should do.

      I have the following folders on my SD card:
      gpslog (this is empty)
      navigation – this contains:
      -> maps (folder)
      -> data.zip
      -> navigation.exe

      My Mio Device is quite empty and has no files on it.
      Thanks

      Hi Buvel,
      I am not an expert but just trying to help:

      Did you see your GPS works before you tried to do anything ?
      How did you get this SD card with these files ? Mine didn’t come with any.

      Are you sure your computer detected Mio Device as a storage folder ? Then you should see at least four items:
      MioMap [ folder ], setting.ini, settings.dat and utility.ini.

      If you do not see them and your GPS works, check the explorer’s “folder options” — may be you have something checked which is hiding those files from you. Also, can you do a right click on that drive [ Mio device ] and select properties ? what does it tell you ?
      Hope it helps.

      murphyfields,

      At this point, there is almost no way to get an ActiveSync installed program install onto your Mio, primarily because the CORE version of WinCE 5.0 has had so much stripped out of it regarding CAB and ActiveSync installs. I say almost though, only because a hacker usually is able to figure out a way – eventually. We are working on it though – just today I got CAB installs working thanks to dominique.

      buvel,

      Are you sure you don’t have a Mio C320? If you indeed have a C230, then Nirapada’s questions and suggestions all apply.

    137. Buvel said

      Hi

      Thanks for the replies.

      First of all the GPS works fine.
      I double checked and there is a system.ini file on the Mio Device folder with the following content:
      [Setting]
      Timeout=600
      Volume=2
      Backlight=5
      LCID=1033
      TimeZone=36

      There are also two empty folders Mp3 and My pictures which I left out before as I think they are irrelevant.

      My SD card has the following content:
      iGO_backup.db file
      gpslog (empty folder)
      navigation – this looks like the main application folder.
      When I replaced the DATA.zip file here with quicksilver’s new skins it worked.
      this contains a lot of program files. Main exe file is called navigation and here of course there is a maps folder with my .fbl files.

      Thanks

      Regarding the stripped OS:

      Hypothetically, couldn’t one purchase say, a damaged GPS that is running a “full” or “fuller” version of Windows CE and transfer either the OS or the missing components over to one’s C230?

      If it’s even technically possible I don’t know if it’s strictly legal, or if if it’s a gray area since one would own both units at that point.

      I only suggest this because _so_ many inexpensive GPS units are becoming available that are not only running on 400Mhz ARM platforms, but actually running some version of the Mio software already! 😀

      I don’t know if the 16-Dollar license would give one the needed files or if it would otherwise require the better part of 1000-Dollar developer resource kit to make a custom build.
      http://www.microsoft.com/windows/embedded/license.mspx

      Of course some or even all of the maps or maybe even the extras might well have to get bumped out to the SD card to allow room for a full or fuller OS install, but I think anyone who goes into this should be prepared to have a card anyway.
      (I’m glad I grabbed an 8GB card when I had the chance. This thing is an awesome personal media player and it allows for doing stuff like this if needed.)

      It’s the best idea I could come up with.

    139. c230 said

      I too have thought along those lines strider, but in reality we could stop all development work right now and be pretty pleased with what we’ve got. It’s the challenge of being able to enhance the capabilities “a little bit more” (for FREE) that keeps us going.

      After all, there are plenty of higher-end units available if certain features and capabilities were really that important to us and end up being undoable on the C230. 🙂

      You are in the right spot to pick up some great deals though…

      I actually would rather process the cab file on my pc and move it directly to where I want it(guess I’m just paranoid). That being the case: My biggest question now is how to get around the installer programs that are requiring sync.

    147. murphyfields said

      OK, let me see if I have this right…

      In my case, I download a PC .exe file. It self extracts into a windows directory, attempts to install via autosync, and fails. No problem, I just copy the .cab file to my c230 and run the routine. It may or may not work depending on support code on the c230, and if it doesn’t, so be it. But is this the general procedure?

      Incredible job putting this all together!

    148. dominique said

      hi, all
      I think that the .cab installer wceload.exe should be seen as a tool to be used to install our own package for exemple a complete unlock install (program,directory and registry) (possible from a sdcard ;.)
      We could also share each over the .cab that worked out of the box for our c230.
      We could also (an i’m trying to do it whith iomogu.cab game) modify the .cab to add the missing dll to it, or move the files in the right place (using microsoft cabwizard.exe for example).
      I think that this is a first step before adding activesync. Why activesync and i will respond : remote control, remote keyboard, directory sync (a game directory for example, or a cab repository) and much more possibilities.
      Activesync is not as far as we think, just try this .mscr scripts and plug your usb cable after changing a value :
      1/ to see what is the actual cfg :
      curcfg=RegRead( “HKLM”, “Drivers\USB\FunctionDrivers”, “DefaultClientDriver”)
      message ( curcfg )

      2/ using as usb mass storage (the default config)
      RegWriteString( “HKLM”, “Drivers\USB\FunctionDrivers”, “DefaultClientDriver”, “Mass_Storage_Class”)

      3/ activesync …
      RegWriteString( “HKLM”, “Drivers\USB\FunctionDrivers” , “DefaultClientDriver”, “Serial_Class”)

      4/ No idea
      RegWriteString( “HKLM”, “Drivers\USB\FunctionDrivers” , “DefaultClientDriver”, “RNDIS”)

      murphyfields,

      Yes, that’s the jist of it. On 11/15/2007 (way back when I bought my C230 🙂 ), I wrote:

      I’m finding quite a few programs that I’d like to try out, like GPSimply (straight-line GPS Navigation, as in boating and flying) that installs via .cab file. My experience is that the C230 doesn’t have WCELOAD.EXE loaded that is needed to process the .cab file though, so that is the next challenge. I have come up with the registry change needed to switch the USB connection between the PC and the Mio C230 from Mass Storage Class to Serial, which in theory should prevent USBconnect from grabbing the port and allow ActiveSync to instead govern the connection. Haven’t tried it yet though: #RegWriteString (”HKLM” , “Drivers\USB\FunctionDrivers” , “DefaultClientDriver” , “Serial_Class”) Can anyone offer their experience in finding a solution? First thing to try – locating a copy of WCELOAD.EXE and hope all the needed drivers are already present.

      WCELOAD was stripped out of WinCE 5 for the CORE version and now we’ve got it back. Many programs have a CAB available right on their download page. Always look for the ARM version and try them out. If you install to the default location, you won’t have to worry about how to remove if you DON’T like the program; just do a hard reset and all will be gone.

      I am sorry if this has been answered before, I could not find out. In my games menu screen [ which I designed ] I have game icons lined up in the rightmost column of the screen. For some games like CEZebra, it does not use the whole screen — keeps rightmost column unused which is showing those games menu buttons which I would like to be cleared when the game is running. Is there a way to do this via .ini files ? Thanks for your help,

      great hack!!
      but I have 2 problems:
      1. when I choose a skin it changes my Data.zip file to size 0 and so I must avoid choosing a skin, hence I don’t have an “exit” in miomap and when I want the pda I have to reset the machine, set the clocks manually, etc.
      2. I think the ~1GB of the mio is enough (after deleting some unused maps), so I how do I use the unlocked without the SD card? – in the instructions Skins and Games folders are copied to the root of the SD card. How do I change that?

      thanks,
      simon

    163. c230 said

      Hi simon,

      It’s pretty hard to use ver 3.5 without a SD card. If affordability is an issue, just buy the least expensive one you can find, or if you don’t want to change skins, run programs, etc. try the LITE version.

      You don’t have 1GB to play with – unless you do a lot of deleting and each DATA.ZIP file is around 5MB. I’m not saying it can’t be done, but the package is designed with a SD card in mind. You would have to change the path statements of a lot of programs, etc otherwise.

    164. simon said

      thanks c230,
      I deleted few maps that I’m not using everyday so I have the space..
      I just wanted it to be part of the system so that if I put another sd card in it, I won’t have problems running some of the games, etc. It’s like having a pc running some of the useful applications from a cd- can cause problems.
      Anyway, reading your reply, I understand it’s not worth the effort and I’ll just stuck an sd card in it, and copy the necessary dirs. if I move to a bigger one..
      other than that, your work is awesome!
      simon

    165. c230 said

      Thank you Simon.

      If you decide that is the direction you wish to take later, you may have learned enough by then to decide what you want to reside in your Flash Disk and make the necessary changes. I find that with a 2GB SD card, I’ve got more than enough room for my skins, maps, trial programs, backup folders, tracks, etc. and never need to consider a second card.

      I’m still using my version 3.5, along with the newer Routes Menu, and customized desktop screens to accomodate additional program icons. It is so neat to be able to drop a modified or a brand new skin into the SD card and use the menu to load it and try it out.

    166. amida168 said

      C230,
      When you tried teddy_b’s timezone hack for the new DST rules. Do you have to change the zip file name to DATA.ZIP?

    167. c230 said

      amida,

      No, the override file in the SKIN folder can have any name.ZIP. As you know though, the files in the MioMap folder have to be named DATA.ZIP

      By the way everything works now with the new updated Launcher.exe file that Tim provided. I just had to remove the command from my Routes.mscr that inserted reset_os_timezone=1 into my SYS.TXT file.

    168. amida168 said

      C230,
      Thanks. Where can I find the updated Launcher.exe? Why did you have to remove the reset_os_timezone=1 command?

    169. c230 said

      Amida,

      If time sync is invoked in MioMap, teddy_b’s updated timezones.ini file in the config folder of the override SKIN file takes care of the registry for all time zones, making the registry tweak in autopatcher unneeded (which really only accomodated EST anyways 🙂 ).

      So after a hard reset, the initial execution of MioMap is supposed to relay the time zone info to the registry. You’ll note that the time will be an hour off for those of us dealing with DST. From then on though (until another hard reset) when you start MioMap again, the time on the GPS screen will be correct, but it won’t sync to your C230 (even manually) if SYS.TXT contains “reset_os_timezone=1” now that “RegWriteDword(”HKLM”,”Software\Microsoft\Clock”,”AutoDST”,1)” is in my autopatcher (as recommended by Tim Rude)

      Tim Rude’s mod of the C230 Launcher can be found at https://c230.wordpress.com/2008/04/03/geocaching-with-the-c230/#comment-1766 which fixes the issues I’d raised previously with your SD Unlock Launcher.

      Thanks for bringing the Launcher issues to our attention in the first place, It explains why no one was able to get backlighting and some other items to behave in our older Unlock packages.

      Maybe I should publish the next version of my Unlock package to incorporate all of these “improvements”.

      Also for c230, thanks for all the amazing work. Although I’m not using your unlock, it’s blogs like this that got me to choose the mio.(and keep me awake at night!)

    175. c230 said

      You are welcome. I’m enjoying the Mio too, as you can probably tell. ANd when someone says something like – “It’s not possible to play Music from within MioMap on the cheaper units that don’t have MioPlayer”, I enjoy the challenge of making it happen.

      Has anyone tried using the version 3.5 of the unlock with a non-MioMap navigation software. For example, my Mio c230 has Destinator 7 navigation software instead of MioMap V3, though it has all the folder hierarchy as described in the unlock details. My folder hierarchy is as follows:

      MioMap
      — MioMap
      ——- MapDir
      ———– *.MAP
      ———– *.POI
      ——- Skin
      ——- Language
      ——- Voice
      ——- UserData
      ———– Activation
      ———– Favourites
      ———– MPR
      ——- Voice
      ——- Navigation Destinator.exe
      ——- Destinator [config]
      ——- Route Turn [config]
      — slideplayer
      ——- more things

      Will installing the unlock work with such a setup. Has anyone tried that yet. My though is that it would not work, since the moment I have a MioMap folder without a “Navigation Destinator.exe”, I think my navigation software will be lost, is that correct?

    177. c230 said

      Tanvir,

      Not having experience with Destinator, I can only theorize. Hopefully you’ll get an answer from someone who’s actually been through this already, but unless you rewrite the scripts, you’ll also need the Script Folder at \My Flash Disk\Script.

      I noticed in an earlier post something about MioPocket. Were you able to get it to work on your C230, or did you have problems with the suspend button?

    179. c230 said

      hi murphy,

      I have not tried MioPocket yet, but at the pace Osprey is going, it may be THE unlock package for all Mio GPS units one of these days, once all of the quirks are worked out. I also have not progressed much further with BeeLine, as all of my trials got me no further than where we were at.

      I’m currently trying to get the 12M POI version of the Arizona map (Nevada was successful) as my brother is getting married in Las Vegas, so I’d like to pre-plan my side trip to Grand Canyon from Vegas. Can you believe that the Grand Canyon National Park isn’t in the native Arizona map POIs?

      No need to rent a GPS from Dollar 🙂

    180. murphyfields said

      MioPocket is pretty impressive, and incredibly ambitious. I can’t imagine taking your traffic and multiplying by the number of platforms.

      I think I have all of the maps, at least from January 2007.

    184. c230 said

      Carlos,

      You can do all of the above, but you might have to delete quite a few map files to make room for all of the files. There would be a lot of editing required; I recommend buying a 500MB SD card instead – they are cheap.

      Greetings,
      I have a question regarding the setup. On your SD card, do i just drag the entire folder “Storage card folders” over to my SD card, or do i open Storage card folders and cut them individually and drag them over? does it make a difference? because when i start my mio 3.3 with the ameridan skin there is no exit icon. Thanks in advance.

    187. Brett said

      OOPS i meant to post that in the version 3.6 forum.

    188. c230 said

      As stated in Step 9, don’t drag the folder to your Storage Card; Copy the five folders within Storage Card folders which are: BeeLineGPS, Metro, Skins, uBook and Games to the root of your SD card.

    189. Klein said

      just did the unlock. everything works great, but i don’t have an exit door. any ideas?

    190. c230 said

      You won’t see the exit door unless you have swapped the default skin with one containing the exit door (or perform the skin mod yourself). The easy method is to pull up the Skin swap menu and select one of the skins I’ve provided.

      Enjoy!

      I just d/l the unlock today and it seems very cool. However, in trying the apps, I notice that I do not have a full view of the calculator – no “=” specifically, unless I am blind (which I may be). Also, the extit always takes me back to the calculator and I have to hard reset. Thoughts?

    192. c230 said

      You don’t need an = with this calculator as the current answer is displayed at the top. Click on the About button and then on the X to exit back to the desktop. Although “different”, the calculator program functions and behaves well.

I just need an image file from someones working c230 or lots of help! THANKS someone in advance!

    194. c230 said

      Roger,

      Assuming you followed the directions…

      Note 1: If you wish to undo the enhancements and return the Mio C230 back to factory condition:

      Turn on C230 and connect it to the computer using a USB cable.
      Rename the folder F:\MioMap\MioMap to F:\MioMap\MioMap3 (or delete) and rename the folder F:\MioMap\MioMap2 to F:\MioMap\MioMap
      Copy back any map files you may have deleted or moved to your SD card and restore your DATA.ZIP file. The SYS.TXT file shouldn’t need to be restored.
      Disconnect the cable and hard reset C230 using the switch on the back of the unit.

      Suggestion:
      Since it is illegal to copy and redistribute the DVD files, you might need to purchase another unit and make a backup copy for yourself prior to returning / reselling the second unit.

      anyway to run this without a battery in place? my battery is shot 45 secs of life without a cable, and i want to just remove the battery as it gets extremely ho whlist plugged in.the problem i see is there are 3 wires going to the board from the battery 1 red 1 black, 1 white. if i twist the red and black together, will the unit still work?

    196. c230 said

      Chris,

      Sounds like the battery is shot. If you don’t want to replace it, simply unplug the connector at the PC board. You should be good, but you’ll have to use external power all of the time and every time the power is interupted it will act like a hard-reset which could be very annoying.

      I recommend checking out this article from my blog and replacing the battery https://c230.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/battery-replacement-on-the-mio-c-230.pdf

    197. Chris Meyers said

      when the battery is unplugged the unit shuts off

    198. c230 said

      I wouldn’t twist the red and black wires together. Not having a schematic, I guess the best alternative would be to replace the battery and I think a recommended source might be here https://c230.wordpress.com/2008/01/06/adding-a-headphone-jack-to-mio-c230/ if it isn’t in the previous article I referenced.

      I’ll modify my last post about unplugging the battery. That is how you solve the shorted battery in most electronic devices though – even laptops,

      Hi,

      Im´m trying to adapt your skin to a mio c220, but I would like to make some modifications. I wold like to transform the GPS icon in some thing like games icon, becouse I use more then one gps program, like igo, navigator and the miomap.

      I tried to make another .ini on Script/SysInfo named gps.ini and then put the same games.ini but with others icons pointing for many different navigators. But when I do this I got the error: “There is no application associated with “gps”. Run the application first, then open this file from within the application.”

      Can you give me some help or glue??? 😀

      Thanks

      Alan

    200. c230 said

      Alan,

      If you study the ini’s further you’ll see that the shortcut to new screens are different than program shortcuts. As an example:

      ICONXPBUTTON
      x = 128
      y = 95
      NewIni = \My Flash Disk\Script\SysInfo\Games.INI
      SizeNormal = 64
      SizePushed = 64
      ScaleAlpha = 100
      IconNormal = \My Flash Disk\Script\icons\games64.ico
      ScaleAlpha = 100
      IconPushed = \My Flash Disk\Script\icons\games64.ico
      ShutDownAnimation = FlyRight

      ICONXPBUTTON
      x = 192
      y = 95
      Command = \Storage Card\BeeLineGPS\BeeLineGPS.exe
      SizeNormal = 64
      SizePushed = 64
      ScaleAlpha = 100
      IconNormal = \My Flash Disk\Script\icons\beeline.ico
      ScaleAlpha = 100
      IconPushed = \My Flash Disk\Script\icons\beeline.ico

      You are using command rather than newini
